The best woods for laser cutting are typically those that are light, dry, and have a fine, consistent grain. Here are some of the most commonly used and recommended:
1. Plywood (Laser-Compatible or Baltic Birch)
Pros: Widely available, stable, affordable.
Best type: Look for laser-safe plywood, usually with minimal glue and void-free cores.
Thickness: 1/8" (3mm) or 1/4" (6mm) are most common.
2. Basswood
Pros: Soft, easy to cut, light color (good for engraving), uniform grain.
Cons: Can be a bit brittle in very thin sheets.
3. Birch
Pros: Harder than basswood but still laser-friendly; light tone, clean engraving.
Great for: Signs, models, decorative pieces.
4. Cherry
Pros: Beautiful color, engraves with high contrast.
Cons: Slightly harder to cut, but still doable with proper settings.
5. Maple
Pros: Durable, good for engraving.
Cons: Denser, needs slower speed or more power to cut through.
6. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
Pros: Very easy to cut and engrave, inexpensive.
Cons: Can produce more smoke and fumes due to adhesives—ensure good ventilation.
Woods to Avoid:
Resinous woods like pine or cedar – can create sticky residue and inconsistent burns.
Pressure-treated or chemically-treated wood – releases toxic fumes.
