Welding Inconel — a family of nickel-chromium-based superalloys — requires careful planning and technique due to its tendency to work-harden and its high resistance to heat and corrosion. Here's a breakdown of the best practices:

1. Welding Method
The best methods depend on the application, but typically:

GTAW (TIG welding): Preferred for precision, cleanliness, and control.

GMAW (MIG welding): Suitable for thicker sections or when speed is a priority.

PAW (Plasma Arc Welding): Offers excellent control for automated processes.

Electron Beam / Laser Welding: Used in high-end aerospace/critical applications.

2. Filler Metal
Use a matching or slightly over-alloyed filler:

Inconel 625 or Inconel 82 filler metals are commonly used.

Choose based on base metal compatibility, corrosion resistance, and strength needs.

3. Pre-Weld Preparation
Clean thoroughly: Remove oil, grease, and oxide layers with acetone or MEK and stainless wire brushing.

Fit-up: Precise joint fit-up is essential, especially for TIG welding.

4. Shielding Gas
Pure Argon is typical for TIG.

For MIG, use Argon/Helium mix to improve heat input and penetration.

Avoid gas contamination — Inconel is sensitive to oxidation.

5. Heat Control
Use low heat input to prevent grain growth and cracking.

Interpass temperature should be kept below 300°F (150°C).

Minimize distortion by controlling the heat-affected zone (HAZ).

6. Post-Weld Treatment
No PWHT is usually needed for Inconel 625, but it depends on service conditions.

In critical applications, solution annealing and descaling may be required.

7. Cracking Concerns
Watch for hot cracking and liquation cracking, especially in older or recycled alloys.
